BREAKING: MARAMI ANG NAGULAT SA SINAPIT NI ANNE C ... PANOORIN GRABE
In closing, we extend our deepest condolences to all who are affected by this profound loss. May the memory of this incredible person continue to inspire and guide us in the days ahead.
Anne C. Singer, 77, of Cherry Hill, a former assistant U.S. attorney, dedicated New Jersey public advocate, ethics jurist, author, and world traveler, passed away on Monday, Sept. 26, at her home after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
A recognized expert in legal matters, Ms. Singer was known for her outspoken and well-informed opinions. Her family, in a tribute, highlighted her “highly engaged, educated, and unwavering point of view,” noting that she made a significant impact on many lives. “There was never a political or legal discussion she shied away from,” her family remarked.
Ms. Singer was deeply committed to ensuring that indigent and mentally ill defendants received competent legal representation. She played a key role in strengthening the system that connects defendants with qualified attorneys. From 1974 to 1978, she served as a public advocate in New Jersey’s Office of the Public Defender, was a longtime member of the Criminal Justice Act panel providing private lawyers for federal criminal cases, and handled numerous cases herself as a private attorney.
Her husband, David Berengut, reflected on her deep empathy and dedication to justice, noting that she always looked beyond a person’s background and circumstances. “She found some humanity in everybody,” he said.
